time keeps moving

Well it’s been a busy few weeks with us catching up on the thing we wanted to do. I’ve laid the paving under one of the wheelie bins and even checked it was level from all directions…it looks good and I’m pleased with it.(Now the Word grammar checker wanted me to change under to fewer than but somehow it just didn’t seem right)

Last weekend Martin and Matt went for their camping retreat to Mt Rainer and Mt St Helens… they had a great time but sadly it rained on them a fair amount and the campsite lacked running water of the flushing kind.

Sam and I went out to an art market and watched a film or two relaxing as well as painting some pottery together and chatting over coffee. It was a good weekend followed by a good tea with the Thelins which we enjoyed a lot. After seeing Stardust on Monday we have spent most of the week doing jigsaws of fantasy creatures, playing board games or getting school supplies. I had a bad day on Wednesday …mainly due to not sleeping on Tuesday night at all… for some reason I didn’t get to sleep till 4.30am and it isn’t enough for me anymore! I felt either silly or half dead most of the day and Matt and Sam were great though a little bullying at times…making me go to bed! How the tables turn!!

Today I had a friend round, Susannah, and we had lunch then chatted as I painted the walls in the guest room. The olive made the walls absorb the light and the room close in but I think this butter milk colour works much better so far. It does need at least one other coat maybe two but already the warmth of the oak wood has begun to come alive a bit more and the room has opened up. So tomorrow another coat and then maybe another if it stays this warm and is needed… who knows.

We have Vicki coming to stay on Monday which we are looking forward to a lot ….  So the room will be done at the end of the weekend!

Right now I’m off to shower before bed and wash my hair… I know it’s too much information but it’s hot and humid here right now and I’m hoping I will sleep better after it.

So sleep having been a big part of my week one way or another I hope you all sleep well and have relaxing weekends!

the year of the Trilogy…or the good the bad and the ugly?

Ok so I know my opinion may not actually count for much but if you are reading this then maybe you want to know.

It seems this is the year of the trilogy at the cinema and I’ve been to see a few films recently, though not all of them are third in a series and I wanted to spout about them.

We’ll start with the Bourne Ultimatum. I saw this on Tuesday and admittedly I was tired at the time but I didn’t fall asleep. Having watched the film I now think a notice at the beginning would have been useful…”this film may induce motion sickness in some viewers”. Now I know the cinematography may have been very clever and arty but be honest what good is it if you have to look away so you aren’t queasy…and why film a fight scene if it can’t actually be seen clearly. Unless of course the cameraman was having a convulsion or an earthquake was occurring in which case I apologise…. But I doubt it.

As for the plot well it was a good follow up to the first two films and had really interesting elements in the hunt for the truth but I found that the end was just a bit too reminiscent of ‘Conspiracy theory’ for me …even down to (spoiler coming) the is he alive or dead ending and the woman guessing. Sad but there you are ….. the camera work and the plot ending just left it feeling a bit disappointing for me.

So next if you want it my thoughts on the recent Harry Potter film. Having read these books with a view to seeing if they were ok for my kids I originally decided they weren’t old enough to understand the concepts behind it and fully enjoy them. Now we have all read all the books and I feel while Sam was a little young it was better timing. I know many Christians have slated the books but …honestly … go read them! Unless we are about to burn any books dealing in anything directly relating to our faith then we have to not only be aware of what is out there but appreciate what there is. Science fiction and fantasy engage parts of ourselves that need some release it keeps our imagination alive which is something God gave us. I am also of the opinion that banning your kids from reading a book that you haven’t read is ignorant and short sighted…how can you then have credibility with them and explain why it is unwise? We have had many chats stimulated by situations in the books and I value not only that by the opportunity to explain to my boys why I believe what I do in the light of it.

Anyway as for the film I really enjoyed it, it was a long film BUT time didn’t drag and I didn’t feel the need to check my watch at all.. The sad thing for me is the small interesting bits it left out from the book. This led me wondering why….apart from financial …..reasons it was made into films. Having watched the Narnia series produced by the BBC it struck me recently that a Harry Potter  series would have been equally good and given more time to the extra characters and smaller sub plots within each book. I think it’s sad that many kids are not reading the books only watching the films and I realise that initially it would have reached a much smaller audience but I still feel it would have been REALLY good.

So onto my third film of the evening! “Stardust” This film based on the Neil Gaiman book was wonderful! Having read some Neil Gaiman graphic novels I couldn’t imagine any that would be aimed at children but I was very wrong. This film was 2.5hrs and not a minute was wasted! Amazing costumes with intricate detail, casting was wonderful…. And reads like a who’s who of classic and new actors, Robert De Niro will never look the same to me again, or Michelle Pfeiffer but it was also great to see some English actors…Ricky Gervais…. Ok maybe not actor but does he fit into a box?…and Sarah Alexander…as she never looked in coupling! The film had lots of action and interest for the boys but also had some more adult humour mixed into it for the parents. It was great and one for buying on DVD when possible. If you liked the action and humour of Princess Bride …you will like this one though it differs in plot I think it appeals to the same part of you. Oh and if you feel the need to make it educational you can use all sorts of bits of the plot to chat through things with your kids…. Who you love and why, morality and conscience, honesty and the value of who you really are not who you are supposed to be. “some people are shop boys, while others just work in shops.” It’s a fairytale done they way it should be.

So there you are for what it’s worth that’s my opinion on those films you don’t have to agree or like my opinion but hey it’s my space so here it is.

Well the house and garden online at times so I though I’d best update you. (hi Debbie and all the midwives!) In a photo…’queen of all she surveys’ in the photo album you can just to the right of Cobweb see the beginning of a hedge. Now this hedge not only took up lots of space, needing clipping, held all sorts of dead things within in but it also smelt of almonds and attracted wasps which so close to the deck was grim none of us liking the almond taste or smell. So we decided a while ago to get rid of it and put more …yes you guessed it …roses in there with some lavenders and a buddleia. There is also a patch of garden that backs onto the family room chimney breast that has stuff in either over grown or unliked so the ones we do like from there will be moved into the new long bed and that turned into a space for a bench with some herbs around it to smell nice and maybe a honeysuckle. I’ll show you a before shot.

So this weekend on Saturday all of us set to work getting rid of the hedge. It was really hard work but after a big team effort we got rid of it. At times it was like enacting the enormous turnip with three of us pulling and the other lifting with a garden fork (because a dinner one would have been silly) and yes we did all shoot back a number of times. It became more fun when a pipe came up with a root and ‘came off in our hands’ not knowing what it connected to Martin went to check the garden sprinkler system…… sadly being tired and not feeling bright the kids and I moved too slowly and became a little damp though thoroughly refreshed! On to the next part of the shrubbery and the soil had become a little damp and muddy as had the bush we were holding and when the roots did come free, which I think was then easier, we got showered in roots and wet soil. Ah well it’s all good ‘clean’ fun! So now the hedge has gone and you can see how it looks from the photo. We cleared up and started to think about the next job…only think though! After showers and tea we all collapsed in front of Indiana Jones 3 then crawled to bed.

Sunday was a day of relaxing and planning for the next garden job…… paving under the wheelie bins! There is a method you see…we can then wheel them around more easily AND we can use the soil from there to boost the new rose bed up a bit. We are also going to wire off the under deck area so cats and raccoons can’t hide under there.

Sunday evening I went to the cinema with Linda (hi Linda!) and watched ‘no reservations’ it was ok…. Not great but ok and very predictable but sometimes that’s what we need isn’t it? The visit to the pub after was great though and I laughed so much my eyes sprang a leak.

Oh on the cats…they have over the time since we came back brought all manner of gifts living and dead to me…and of course I’ve expressed gratitude and given them treats while removing the creature from the floor. Cobweb seems to be hanging around the house more right now and enjoying the deck and lounging about. Baxter …still dumb with flashes of brilliance…. wanders off  to the edges of the garden and tries to catch flies …though to be fair he has brought me a moth and a very scared looking mouse or two.

Right I’m off to get some breakfast and tidy up… there seem to be muddy footprints around the house… I can’t imagine why!I know some of you are looking at

Photo’s to come!

After the Holiday

That has to have been the busiest holiday I have ever had. It was good to catch up with people and see that for most a year hadn’t changed the friendship but it was so tiring. We had some really good days with our families too, relaxing and catching up without the crackle of the phone was so nice. Sadly we didn’t get to see everyone we had wanted to and that was really hard but we literally ran out of time and were seeing people up til 8pm of the night before we left for the airport at 5.30am. I got on the plane feeling exhausted and looking forward to sleep without a timetable for the next day. We didn’t have the best flights back I won’t go into too many details but we have never felt a plane ‘sway’ before and have vowed never to go through Charles-De-Gaulle airport again or fly Air France. It was so good to be home though. Before we left I’d taken a tip from my mum and cleaned and tidied the house….it was great the house looked wonderful to come home to and having sprayed neutrodol before we left it smelt great too…fresh and clean.
Well the day after we arrived was for washing unpacking cases and collecting the cats. Both cats had upsets stomachs on the way home which apart from making the car smell awful left some nasty cat box washing to be done but having been up since 4am and getting the shopping out of the way at 5am my day was clear for washing of things. Now a week later we are all back to normal though still a bit tired. The boys have new beds which they love and will last them till they move out….. which involved disassembling the old ones and putting together the new ones on Saturday. They look great but my hands hurt after a while.
Today both boys are off to Wild Waves a wet theme park so I am hoping to do all the cleaning and ironing so we can do other stuff tomorrow. Life has been busy since we returned with vaccinations, karate and Sam having a brace put on. He is coping with it ok though his mouth is a bit sore right now, hopefully today will help him feel better….. oh and he has bands on the fixings in blue and yellow….looks odd to start with but he loves it.
Ok a brew awaits me now and then we’ll see what else the day brings. I may tell you more about the holiday soon.

well the countdown is well and truly on for the holiday now and we are all looking forward to catching up with as many people as we can.
sometimes it seems very unreal that a year and however many miles have been passed/past since we left and yet looking back on the individual days I can easily believe it.
I’ve found a cattery for the cats to go to and am able to email to check how they are while I’m away which is great and I feel more peaceful about leaving them now.
I have nearly all my dominoes in a line ready for getting my qualifications sorted over here, so will be putting that in motion soon…but it’s very complicated and it hurts my brain at times….. I just can’t juggle
So if we are seeing you during our visit please expect us to turn up as planned unless we call to say otherwise…which we won’t!

The main theme for this week seems to be wildlife and teeth. Sadly the boys have both needed some work which included Matt having a milk tooth removed today at the dentist. As both boys are also having orthodontic care they were given tickets to attend an event today. The Orthodontist is taking over Cold Stone the local ice cream heaven and giving ice creams to all his patients….the boys are more than a bit happy about it. It’s an odd idea but even so they are happy.
It was date night last night and we went for a walk in Redmond along the river. It’s amazing what you can see apart from a huge variety of birds and a rabbit we saw a great blue heron which was feeding. At nearly 4ft tall it was an impressive sight and yet so still most people didn’t notice it and from the other side it couldn’t be seen at all. It was quite a sight slowly and deliberately stalking and catching fish, then it flew off overhead like some prehistoric bird to rest at the top of a tree.
We saw another animal as we walked but as yet I’ve no idea what it was, not a squirrel or a ferret but something between the two.. I’ll try to find out and let you know.
Well as the boys are now on summer holiday we have got a bit more sleep which is wonderful…life is more relaxing and laid back though we have plans for doing some studying of choice over the summer.
